Maó-Mahon
Teatre Principal

Considered the oldest opera house in Spain, The Princi- pal was built in 1829 by the Italian Giovanni Palagi, on the same site as the old theatre, within an old bastion of the city walls that surrounded the city. The decoration works were done by the ciudadela artist Andrés Galbis.

Improvements were made along the first half of the XIX century and the Neoclassical façade was built. The restoration works done after 150 years of existence gave back the theatre the charm and splendour of the early eighteen hundreds.
